The planned festival and 20th anniversary of Marco Pantani’sGiro/Tour double back in 1998 is set to have three top names in Lance Armstrong, Bradley Wiggins and Alberto Contador, as per reports.

Pantani’s mother Tonina wants a special event in the family’s hometown this year. The granfondo celebrations has taken place a number of times over the years but this year’s event in Cesenatico would have the some of the biggest names in the game for the last 20 years.

Other names like Miguel Indurain, Jan Ulrich, Ivan Basso, PavelTonkov and others have reportedly confirmed their attendance at the event. Former pro Alessandro Vanotti, whose 13-year career saw him ride for Liquigs, Astana and Milram, was reportedly charged with getting the biggest names for the event.

The grandfondo will take place on September 2 with the three choices of distance 73km, 107km and 145 km all along the front of the Pantani statue in his hometown in Italy. Till date no one has equaled the legend’s feat. He is the last rider to have won two of the biggest Grand Tours in the game: the Girod’Italia and Tour de France. Chris Froome is the only one that could have matched the record but he is currently embroiled in a doping scandal.

After the huge feat in 1998, Pantani was expelled from the Girod’Italia in 1999 for high haematocrit level after he used EPO. Though his family claims he was murdered, reports says he died of cerebral edema and heart failure due to cocaine poisoning.
